Photography Lessons + Workshops

1-on-1 photography lessons and workshops with Matthew Dols

With almost 25 years’ experience in the photography industry and 12 years in academia, I will create a bespoke hands on private lesson or workshop to your interests and photographic needs. I will teach you both what you want to know and things that you didn't even know you needed to know.
Prague, Czech Republic

I believe that the every student could be the best in the world. Every single student that walks through my door has the potential to be the best in the world, and throughout the lessons we work together to accomplish this shared goal. I teach using the Socratic Method for learning with an emphasis on probing questions and focusing on reasoning and problem solving above seeking only an answer or solution.

This process can take many forms, and I find it my responsibility to help focus and evaluate the step by step development of the creative possibilities and potentials for each individual student. Sharing my own experience and caring about the experience of students creates an environment for learning at a level that enhances communication, nurtures exploration and creates new visions that take creative photographic form.

Matthew Dols has his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. His artwork has been exhibited in USA, UAE, Italy, Cuba, Canada, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Germany. His work is in the collections of the Al Serkal Foundation, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Crown Point Press, and the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Legion of Honor Museum. You can see my complete CV here. Matthew has been a photographer for almost 25 years and a professor of Visual Arts and Photography for over 12 years in the USA, UAE and Czech Republic. Having worked as a photojournalist, portfolio reviewer for Lensculture.com, art critic, fashion photographer, fine artist, director of an arts NGO, and managed art galleries, I feel that I offer the ability to have an informed perspective on photography. The art galleries and portfolio reviews have given me insight into the nuances of what galleries are seeking to exhibit and why; including the economics of how the art world functions. Being an art critic offered me the opportunity to gain a different view into the public understanding of how people interact with, experience, and choose to purchase art.  Working as a non-profit director utilized my resourcefulness as a facilitator for individual artists and art businesses to work together for the benefit of the community in which they live and work.   Some topics I can assist you with:
