When I tell the truth people think I am lying | 1998 – 2001

Book of illustrated journal entries written by Matthew Dols.

Every person I know has a box of personal items that they keep hidden. It is not exactly hidden. They subconsciously want someone to find it. They want someone to care enough about them and their life to want to know the stories behind the things that matter enough to them to keep hidden in a box.

This work shows the world my box, not so that they will care about me or my life, but so that they might better understand their own.

This handmade folio/book is an edition of 3 entitled “When I tell the truth people think I am lying” produced in 2001. The images are appropriated from mass media, These impersonal images are then contrasted with personal writings from my journal.
